Vons and Sprouts 9/25

I will be visiting these stores on Sunday...I have to use my $10 off catalina coupon by Sunday for Vons. I had purchased two itunes gift cards and was supposed to get a $10 off my next shopping trip from the catalina machine, but it didn't print! So I emailed them and they confirmed I should have received it and sent me a replacement that finally arrived this week. Just another reminder that it is good to stay on top of all the offers you should be receiving.

Sprouts has some good produce deals:
Haas avocados for 77 cents each.

Acorn Squash for $0.88 per lb (I love this time of year - you can bake these up with butter and brown sugar)

Bartlett Pears for $0.49 per lb

Gala Apples, Zucchini, and Broccoli each for $0.88 per pound

Strawberries for $2.50 each

Yellow onions for $0.49 per pound

French Bread for $1.19

Vons: For my vons trip, I am going to be stocking up on some soups and baking items that are on sale. They also have a mix and match sale this week; if you buy 8 or more items included in the sale, you get 50 cents off each item.

Philly Cream Cheese - B1G1, $1 off 2 coupon (printable coupon)
Campbells Condensed Soup - $1 each, $0.40 off 2 (9/11 SS) (doubles to $0.80 on the first coupon)
Campbells Select Harvest Soup - $1.79 each, included in the mix and match sale, $1/3 coupon (printable)
Dark Chocolate Tollhouse Morsels - $3.49 each, included in the mix and match sale, $1/1 (8/21 SS)
Pillsbury Ready-to-Bake Cookies - $2.49 each, included in the mix and match sale, $0.75/2 (9/11 General Mills flyer, doubles to $1)

There are obviously a couple other items I will be picking up for meals like some OreIda Steam and Mash frozen potatoes (also included in the mix and match sale), Mission Tortilla Chips (in the mix and match sale), and Knorr Homestyle Stock (currently priced at $3.49, included in the sale, plus there is a $2 off coupon - this is cheaper than Walmart this week). Also milk, bread, eggs...the normal stuff. Didn't notice if there were any big sales on these items this week - sometimes CVS or Target has good deals on milk, so check and compare the ads on Sunday. I think I have Vons worked out so that I will be saving about 78% this week! We will see if it pans out...

REMINDER: the Farmer's Markets are opening this week! La Quinta's Farmer's Market is on Sunday from 8-12 in Old Town. Always nice to buy local if you can.

Thanks for looking and Happy Shopping!

New Deals in the CV

Hello out there...now that we have settled into a schedule (kind of)...I am going to get back to this!

Some news to share: couponmom.com just started posting a list of prices for Costco, complete with the per unit pricing so you can compare with your grocery store. This is awesome. I am planning to print it out and take it to our local Costco to see if the couponmom's prices are similar to ours (she is in Georgia, so pricing may be different). I am going to use it as a way to build a price list for Costco, so if I finally get to building my own version, I will see if I can update my page here to include it.

I am still using her website as a good tool to build my lists, but things can be different from what we see out here. For example, this week she had that CVS was going to have Gold Emblem candy corn on sale for 99 cents and then there was going to be ECB of 99 cents (limit 1). However, when I looked at our ad, it said it was 49 cents. No ECB's! I had been looking forward to "free" candy corn...but it was a reminder that we can have different pricing out here in Southern California. I was still able to get 3 packs of diapers (for a diaper cake I am making, thankfully), two lip glosses, two drinks (impulse buy with my DS), and two bags of halloween candy for about $35 OOP with $11 of ECB for next time. ;-)

I will post here shortly with my shopping lists for this week...there are some good sales on condensed soup if you need to stock up. Those are always good for cooking and since it is looking like it *might* cool down soon, you might as well be ready! :-) I am going to try to stick to two stores this week: Sprouts and Vons. I have Scrip that I bought from my DD's school that I need to use.

Will share those soon.
Thanks for looking and Happy Shopping.

Target Trip, 9/7

Wanted to do a quick post about my target trip this afternoon. I did two transactions so I could use all of my coupons; Target coupons specifically say that you can only use one per transaction, so that means splitting my trip into two transactions to get all the savings! FYI: when you print coupons from Target's website or from any coupon website (including coupons.com, redplum.com, etc), they will allow you to print twice per computer.

BIG SAVINGS was found by purchasing the Simply Juice drinks in the single-serving size. The La Quinta Target has their small Simply Juices marked at 73 cents each. There is a printable coupon for $1 off any size Simply Juice. That means I had 64 cents to spend on the rest of my order and I got those free.

Many of the back-to-school items are on sale including spiral bound college-ruled notebooks. They were marked 20 cents each, but they rang up at 14 cents each!

There is also a Target printable coupon for $1 off both market pantry pasta and spaghetti sauce together. Well, each was $1, so it ended up that I got pasta and sauce for $1. Add some broccoli and there's a complete vegetarian meal on the CHEAP!

I also had some Bounce dryer bar coupons from Vocalpoint - Target has a deal this week for a $5 Target gift card when you buy 2 P&G items. So I paid a total of $7.98 for two Bounce dryer bars and got a $5 gift card, so my final price after the gift card was $2.98 for two dryer bars! I love those things.

Target also has some coupons for their Up&Up brand cleaning and paper items...used some of those for paper towels and disinfecting wipes for school supplies.

Hope that helps you in your shopping trips...Good luck to you and Happy Shopping!

Shopping this week - 8/28

It is Back-to-School day tomorrow! This means school supplies, lunch stuff, and homemade dinners. Yes, you CAN cook dinners every night and save money. You just have to have a plan! The more planning you can do in advance (say on a not-so-busy Sunday) means that you will know exactly what you can make each night and you know you have the right ingredients to do that. I have a list of about 10-12 different dinners that I make and I know exactly what ingredients I need to make them. This makes it easy to stockpile items and use fresh ingredients when they are available.

So I was fortunate that my daughter's teacher did not have an individual student supply list, but she did have a class list. I am going to shop for the lowest prices and get them in the coming weeks. I have looked at ads and it seems that EVERYONE is running $0.01 sales on supplies. You might try looking on weusecoupons.com for the best deals on supplies.

For store shopping, it will take going to a couple stores this week in order to get the best deals, unfortunately. I like to try to narrow it down to the best one or two stores, but I don't know if I can do that this week! It looks like I will be stopping at CVS, Target, Walmart, Vons, AND Sprouts. :-S

At CVS, there is All detergent (we have found the free and clear is the best!) for $3.99 minus a $1 MQ. They are also running a $1 ECB deal on milk. I am pretty well stocked-up on toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, and bodywash for the next couple of months, but if you need these items, check the deals on couponmom.com.

At Target, you can get a Cascade complete 3ct pack for free. They are apparently $0.97 each and there is $1 off MQ. They also have nutrigrain bars for $2.50 each and I think there is $1/2 MQ.

Walmart has Huggies flushable wipes for $1.64 minus a $1 MQ, I am getting an 8-pack of yoplait yogurt for $4 and I am SURE I have a coupon (will revise when I figure out that one), they have Dreyer's ice cream for $3.88 and there was a coupon for $2 off 2 back in June. There are moneymaker deals for floss, febreze, and a couple other items too. Again, check couponmom.com.

At Vons, they have Buy 2 Get 2 Free on the 12 packs of Coke and you also get 2 free bags of Snack Artist chips, Fresh Express salads are B1G1 AND I got a get one free coupon in the mail from Vocalpoint, and I will be getting a few items so we can make Ribbolita again with our CSA box veggies.

FINALLY, at Sprouts, they have Cantaloupe 3 for $1 (!); Red bell peppers 3 for $1; celery, iceberg or romaine lettuce for $0.88 each; Peaches or Plums for $0.88 a lb.; Bartlett pears 3 lbs for $1; Baby peeled carrots, 1 lb bag for $0.88 each, Green and red seedless grapes, 4 lbs for $5; Organic gala apples, $1.50 a lb.; Hansen's natural apple juice for $1.50 each (sunday only); Mini seedless watermelon, 4 for $5 (sunday only); chicken breasts 50% off; Sprouts sprouted breads, $2.50 each; Organic lemonade, $2.50 each (there was a coupon for this in-store last week); and Pork sirloin chops or roasts for $2.99 per lb. Looks like you could put together some healthy lunches this week with some of those items!

Post here if you find any other good deals worth mentioning...Thanks and Happy Shopping!

Strange shopping week...

Just thought I would share my shopping this week...or lack of shopping...

I did go to the new Sprouts and use my $5 off coupon...was able to get a bunch of good deals and I still forgot to get the hummus! Oh well. There was a great coupon sheet at the front of the store, too. It is right when you walk in by the flowers. Hopefully they still have some left - any saving is good!

I have been very unimpressed by sales lately...not much going on. It looks like there *might* be some better prices in the coming week, but I have avoided Vons. And now I am not sure what is going to happen with strikes, so we all may want to avoid it for the near future. :-S Don't know what I will do with that... It is bad when you get spoiled by low prices and then get frustrated when you only save 40%.

Hopefully the stores will run some specials with school starting in the coming days. I will let you know what I do for back-to-school supplies, too!

This is when I am glad I have a good stash of frozen meat...stockpiling can be good if you have the room in your freezer. Good luck to you on saving...hopefully it will get better soon!

Happy Shopping!

Henry's 8/17-8/24

The big news this week: Henry's is now back with Sprouts! We drove by there today and they were already changing the sign. So, really the title of this post should be "Sprouts 8/17-8/24"!

I don't know if this is a promotional thing for just this week, or if we will be getting these coupons every week, but there is a $5 off $30 coupon in the flyer today. Yay! So if you can calculate it just right so that you only spend $30, that's a 17% savings.

All sorts of good deals, too...which makes me think it won't last. But I will be taking advantage while it does!

Here they are:

UPDATED 8/17**I just noticed in the top right corner of the front page of the ad: Bananas for $0.49! I am not sure why they hid that deal unless they really don't want everyone clearing out their stash. That is about as cheap as they get.
Red Bell Peppers, $0.49 each. (Remember to weigh and get the biggest one...more for your money!)

Red, White, or Yellow Onions, $0.49 per pound.

Broccoli and Cauliflower crowns, $0.88 per pound.

Mushrooms, sliced or whole, $0.99 each.

Roma tomatoes, $0.49 per pound.

Red or Green Leaf Lettuce, $0.49 each. (Again, pick the biggest one!)

Yellow nectarines and Black Plums, $0.88 per pound.

(I am getting hungry!)

Organic Red or Green Seedless Grapes, $1.99 per pound. (This is a good price for organic!)

Sprouts Bread is on sale 30% off.

Horizon Organic Milk is 2 for $6. (Keep in mind this is a ploy to get you to buy two. You don't have to buy two!)

Pumpkin Granola with Flax in bulk bins, $2.99 per pound.

Toufayan Pitas, 2 for $3. (see note above)

Organic Cantaloupe, $0.69 per pound.

Chicken Drumsticks or Thighs, $1.39 per pound.

Extra Lean Ground Beef, $3.79 per pound.

Eat Well Hummus, Buy 1 Get 1 Free.

There were a couple other items that seem to be a good deal, but I don't usually buy them, so I don't have the price in my "Price Book" (i.e. Edamame for $2, 12 oz Cobb Salad for $3.99...). Just not sure about the price comparison. Post if you think there are others in the ad that I missed. Or if you go and find something else, let me know! Thanks for reading and Happy Shopping!

Our First CSA Box

Here it is! This is the small box. I decided to weigh it as soon as we got home: 18 pounds. The whole box cost us $30, but we are splitting it with the in-laws, so technically about 9 pounds for $15. That works out to about $1.67 per pound. That's pretty good for all organic and local. We got carrots, apples, LOTS of tomatoes (off to the store momentarily to pick up mozzarella and basil), Armenian cucumber (that's the weird looking stripey thing on top), Swiss chard (will be making Tuscan stew/Ribbolita this week), broccoli leaves (will add this to the stew as well), one other leafy green that I have yet to identify, zucchini, shallots, garlic, bunching onions, rosemary, grapefruit, lemons, oranges, and apples! What a variety!

The Ribbolita is going to use up quite a bit of this: carrots, greens, garlic...and I am adding white onion, celery, chicken broth, cannelini beans, and diced tomatoes. I may have to supplement my canned tomatoes with some of the fresh just to use them up! I also already have plans for the zucchini: I have a great recipe for a squash-rice casserole that hides the zucchini well. Cheese = kids like it. ;-)

The kids were very excited to see what was in the box - it was almost like Christmas. They devoured one of the apples and an orange within 5 minutes of getting it out. I think this whole thing *may* just have the result I was looking for: excitement about vegetables and fruit.

That Armenian cucumber was the highlight. They were surprised that I didn't know what it was and we all looked it up on the internet together. They picked it up and smelled it...now if I can just get them to try a bite!

Store closings around town

There are a couple of big-box stores closing/moving around town. I hate to see jobs lost, but the discounts are good.

Borders has decided to close their store in The River in Rancho Mirage. We were there today and most everything is 25-30% off. When I asked about when they would be closing, they said it could be anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks and that they were still receiving pallets of books over the next couple of days at least (presumably from other stores that closed and couldn't sell them). She said it all depends on how fast the merchandise goes. There were quite a few people in there when we went, especially for the middle of the day in the middle of the week.

Also, Toys R Us is moving locations from Palm Desert to Jackson Street in Indio. They are clearing out as much merchandise as they can (it is easier to sell it out than move it) between now and August 24, which is the day I was told the store will close. When we went a week and a half ago, most everthing was 40% off. I would expect it is more now. I am going to grab DH and hit the store for some early Christmas shopping I think! Note: they did NOT receive a shipment of backpacks or lunch boxes, so don't plan to do your back-to-school shopping there. I was highly disappointed about that since they have been running a deal for a free lunch kit with a backpack purchase. Also, don't expect the advertised specials to be valid - the clearance percentage is the only sale.

Hope this helps! Happy shopping!

Inland Empire CSA

I am back. After a brief trip away from the heat of the Coachella Valley, I came back to NOTHING in our refrigerator and I had to scrounge some breakfast for us this morning! Luckily I had picked up some free eggs from the new grocery section of Target, so at least we had that. ;-)

I am not going to post any lists this week since I missed the ads and was frustrated because I was unable to save more than 39% at Vons this week. I guess I am turning into a true extreme couponer. I will say that there are some good deals out there and I still managed to come home with quite a haul: enough food to make about 8 different meals, lunches for us and for DH to have at work, 4 boxes of cereal, milk, bread...and some good produce all for about $140. And I walked away from CVS with a $10 gas gift card, and from Vons with $10 off my next shopping trip. So all in all, not too horrible.

Speaking of produce...I finally did it. I signed up to try the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) box. I was waiting to see if our in-laws would be willing to share it with us since I am not truly convinced that we could eat it all. We are going to do a 4-week trial period and we will be getting the small pledge box each week for a month. I have a feeling that we will be switching to every other week, but that's what the trial period is for. We pick up our first box on August 15th. Can't wait to see what is in it! Mostly I like that it is local, seasonal, and fairly reasonably priced since it is certified organic. It is going to cost $130 total for the 4 weeks, which we will split with the in-laws, making it about $16.25 per week. I think I can do that! :-)

I will update you with how it looks next week and how we use the veggies and fruits we get. In the meantime, I will post as soon as I get the new ads and decide what I will do at Henry's this week. Happy shopping!

E-mealz

I have recently begun looking at Dave Ramsey's financial program and have planned to commit to the program in the very near future. He recommends several companies, and one I saw was "e-mealz". They have weekly menus planned for a number of different stores based on the weekly sales. So, this can go hand-in-hand with the couponing if you are pressed for time. You could probably spend a grand total of about 15 minutes per week clipping the coupons you need and printing out the weekly planned menu which includes a detailed list of what you need to buy at the store. This appeals to me...with the school year rapidly approaching and my impending return to part-time work, I won't be able to spend hours thinking about what I can get for the cheapest price and still put complete meals on the table. So, I signed up. I will update you on how it goes - you can get a store-specific list or a list that is generalized for any store (but this won't necessarily be based on any sales). I didn't see Vons on the list, so I went for the "any store" list. I may switch though - they also have Ralphs and Walmart specific lists. I am going to give it a try for a couple weeks to see if I need to switch.

If you would like to check it out:
E-MEALZ EASY AND DELICIOUS DINNER RECIPES

As a favor to me, I would love it, if you do decide to sign up, if you would do it through that link above...I will get referral rewards! ;-)

Thanks!

Walmart 7/17

I love and I hate Walmart. ;-) They give you the extra on coupons if the value of the product is under the value of the coupon (and sometimes I will buy things just to get the money out of them!)...but they are Walmart.

So here are some of the good deals this week (if these match up to our prices here):
Reach floss, $0.88. $1/1 from 4/17 SS. (Note: THIS is where to buy floss! Don't EVER buy floss anywhere else. Profit of 12 cents on each one. Give them away if you need to!)

Advil, 10ct. $1.84 each. $4/2 from 5/22 SS. Profit of $0.16 on each one. (Another note: I did NOT clip this coupon, and I am regretting it every time I see this deal. CLIP ALL THE COUPONS!)

Sensodyne pronamel, travel size, $0.97 each. $1/1 any size from 5/15 RP. Profit of $0.03 each.

Benadryl itch relief stick (great for purses and/or travel first aid kits), $2.28. $2/1 from 6/19 RP. Final Price = $0.28

John Frieda Full Repair Styler, $5.97. $5/1 from 6/5 SS. Final price = $0.97.

M&Ms chocolate candies, $0.50. $0.75/2 from 7/10 RP. Final price = $0.13 (good one to stock up on for movie theater excursions!)

Of course walmart always has some pretty good deals, but those are the best. Thanks for looking and happy shopping!

CVS Shopping 7/17-7/23

*REVISED 7/17*
Nothing is really catching my eye that I *need* this week...we have lots of free/cheap toothbrushes and toothpaste, so not sure if I will even go to CVS next week, but we will see if something pops up that I need. So far, here's what the best deals are in store for next week:

FREE Oral B Indicator Toothbrush - Buy 1, get $1 ECB. Sale price is 1.99. Coupon for $2/2 from 7/3 p&g. Limit 2.

John Frieda Full Repair Styler, $6. $5/1 from 6/5 SS. Final price is $1. (Walmart beats this by 3 cents.)

Crest Cavity, Tartar control, Cool Gel, or Scope Toothpaste, on sale for 1.99. Buy 1, get $1 in ECB. $0.75/1 Crest toothpaste from 7/3 and 6/5 P&G. Final price = 0.25.

Pantene Pro V Shampoo, conditioner, or Styler, $3.49. $3/2 from 6/19 SS. $2 ECB when you buy 2. Final price = $0.99 each.

Zhu zhu pets on sale for $2 each. (stocking stuffers? Not sure if I want these little "rodents" around my house...at any rate, it is never too early to start thinking about getting toys on sale in anticipation of the end of the year!)

Paper mate pens, 10 pk for $0.50 each.

Gillette Fusion ProGlide, Venus Proskin, Embrace, or Spa Breeze razor, 1ct. $9.99. Buy 1, get $4 ECB. $4/1 Fusion Proglide (6/5 PG) or $2/1 Venus Razor (6/5 PG, 7/3 PG, 6/19 Redplum). Final = $1.99 for proglide or $3.99 for venus.

Henry's this week 7/13 to 7/20

Don't forget that last week's list applies on Wednesday 7/13 (double-ad wednesdays). Some of the best deals I can see are:

Yellow or white nectarines, $0.88 per pound.

Red potatoes, 2 lbs for $1. [Note about this: This is most likely a marketing ploy to make you think you need to buy at least 2 lbs to get the price. However, there is nothing in the ad that says you have to buy 2 lbs. So really this is $0.50 a lb. unless it says something on the sign in the store.]

Yellow onions, 3 lbs for $1. [see note above]

White mushrooms, $0.99 each. [I like this deal - I make a really great mushroom gravy to put on top of pork chops. Let me know if you want it. Not exactly lo-cal, but really yummy. Probably would be good on chicken, too!]

Broccoli crowns, $0.99 per pound.

Chicken half breast, bone-in, $0.88 per pound.

Chicken and pork sausage, $2.99 per pound.

Organic Cameo Apples, $0.77 per pound. **This is a good deal****

Organic Packham Pears, $0.97 per pound.

Friday - Sunday deals:
8 ears of corn for $2.
On-the-vine tomatoes, $0.99 per pound.

Happy Shopping to you!

CSA Box from IECSA

OK - so here's the scoop on the CSA box:

Inland Empire CSA allows you to do a month-long trial period to see if you want to commit to buying more. The small box is $30 each, so the one-month trial would be $120 plus a $10 new member fee. (I was told this is plenty for a family and there definitely would be enough for us to split with my in-laws. Unless someone in your family is a vegetarian, there should be plenty.) The large box is $36 each, so the one-month trial would be $144 plus a $10 new member fee.

If you want to continue your subscription/pledge, you can extend it and pay for up to one year. It saves you about $300 by committing to that whole year up front - they discount it since you are helping the farms to pay their costs ahead. But it is a big chunk of change to pay: $1248 for the small box and $1560 for the large box. They also have shorter commitments: $364 for 13 weeks for the small box (this saves you $26) and $442 (saving $26) for 13 weeks for the large box.

I was also curious as to what you get in the box of fresh goodies. Their website does show what they are currently distributing and this week's produce includes: Apples, Arugula, Broccoli, Broccoli leaves, Carrots, Collard Greens, Grapefruit, Green garlic, Lemons, Mustard greens, Onions, Radishes, and Zucchini. So it isn't all strange veggies that kids may or may not enjoy. And anyway, you know what they say...when life gives you lemons... (couldn't pass up that one!)

I will let you know what our final decision is. If we do it, I might even post what we get each week and recipes I plan to use...Thanks and hope this helps.

Considering a CSA box

I am strongly considering buying a CSA pledge/share in the Inland Empire CSA. What is a CSA pledge, you ask? CSA = Community Supported Agriculture. This is a "share" in a locally-owned, organically managed farm. Every week or every other week you get a box of the available fresh produce - so you are only getting what is in season. This may mean you get some pretty strange veggies that you may not buy at the store. This is my only hesitation; since I have two small kids, I am not so sure how kale and similar oddities will go over with them. But part of being "green" is focusing on what is readily available during the current growing season. Plus, better to start early with trying new things, right?!

I will let you know what my final decision is and whether I go for it or not. I may split it with my in-laws which will make it more affordable. (FYI: a large box is about $36 each time and a small box is about $30 each time and you can do it every week or every other week. The local pickup is in Old Town La Quinta. They say a large box feeds two adults and a couple children, and a small box is meant for two adults. I am thinking the small box will do just fine, but, again, I will let you know what I decide and how it works out.) I am lucky to have a contact who works for this particular CSA, so I can ask some insider questions and find out some good answers for you all. Let me know if I can ask a specific question for you!

Henry's 7/6 to 7/13

Ok here goes! This week Henry's has only a couple really *great* deals that I could see:

Black plums, Yellow or White Peaches, and Yellow or White Nectarines are on sale for $0.49 per pound.

Green leaf or red leaf lettuce are $0.49 each. (Tip: weigh the lettuce to find the largest one - since it is not on a per pound basis, you want to maximize what you get for your money!)

Honeydew, Crenshaw, Canary, or Galia Melons are $0.49 per pound.

Boneless chicken breast tenders, family pack,1.88 per pound.

Angus super lean ground sirloin, family pack, 3.99 per pound.

Bulk roasted almonds, $3.99 per pound.

Organic red mangos, 0.99 each (again - weigh them to maximize cost per pound)

Organic strawberries and blueberries, 2 for $5 (not too bad for organic...)

Organic romaine lettuce, $0.99 each

That's all I really noticed...I usually never use coupons at Henry's, but mostly go there for the produce. GREEN LIVING TIP: don't forget to take your reusable bags - Henry's credits you 5 cents for every reusable bag used.

My first post

Hello out there! I will be posting coupon matchups, recommended deals, and other tidbits here in the very near future. I will be making this blog specific to the Coachella Valley and the stores that we have available here. I would love to hear any feedback on what you would like to see here and what kind of information you would like to know. Like it says at the top, I also try to live as green as possible (even though our weather requires that our A/C is on 24/7 this time of year) and can also provide tips on how to reduce your consumption of resources and hopefully your bills too!

Thanks for checking out my blog and I will be back again soon!
